If you are not familiar with the plot of this popular adaptation of this long-running ABBA-filled musical of international fame, I can’t imagine where you’ve been hiding. Not a problem though. A young lady, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), living on a Greek resort with her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep) is about to be married. A happy girl, her one regret is that she doesn’t know the identity of her father. As she addresses her wedding invitations, Sophie decides to send one to all three of her mother’s old boyfriends. She sees it as a foolproof plan to reveal just which of them is her father. They all show up, and the fun begins. And I do mean fun! Soon you’ll discover that he singing and dancing to the old ABBA hits is the real purpose of the movie, not the storyline at all.
Unfortunately, the film adaptation of “Mama Mia!” is not quite as entertaining as are the stage productions. The musical score has been around for over 30 years and has withstood the test of time. It will remain popular long after this film adaptation collects dust on video shelves. One major drawback is that few of the leads are not very accomplished vocalists. However, it is still a light "feel good" movie that can easily fill a few hours with glee.
